Gestational Diabetes (GDM) Treatment in Dwarka
Sugar control in pregnancy is time-sensitive. Targets are tighter, review is frequent, and care runs alongside your obstetrician.
Who needs to be screened
Screening in pregnancy is routine in India and is usually done in the first trimester and again at 24–28 weeks. Risk is higher if any of the following apply.
- Overweight or obesity before pregnancy
- PCOS or known insulin resistance
- Gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy
- A previous baby weighing over 3.5 kg
- A first-degree relative with diabetes
- Age above 30
How GDM is managed
Most women achieve target readings through a structured meal plan and home glucose monitoring. Where diet alone is not enough, insulin is used — it does not cross the placenta and is the standard safe option in pregnancy.
- A pregnancy-appropriate diet plan with adequate protein and calories
- Home fasting and post-meal monitoring with a written target sheet
- Insulin initiation and dose adjustment where required
- Coordination with your obstetrician through delivery
- Post-delivery glucose re-testing, which is frequently skipped and should not be
Frequently asked questions
Will gestational diabetes harm my baby?
Well-controlled GDM usually results in a normal pregnancy and delivery. Uncontrolled high sugars increase the chance of a large baby, delivery complications and neonatal low blood sugar — which is why targets in pregnancy are stricter than outside it.
Is insulin safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Insulin does not cross the placenta and is the preferred treatment when diet alone does not achieve target readings.
Does GDM go away after delivery?
It usually resolves, but it marks a significantly higher lifetime risk of Type 2 diabetes. A glucose test six to twelve weeks after delivery, and yearly thereafter, is strongly recommended.
