Indian Diabetes Risk Score (IDRS)

A validated four-question screening score developed for the Indian population.

About the Indian Diabetes Risk Score

The IDRS was developed from the Chennai Urban Rural Epidemiology Study as a simple way to identify undiagnosed diabetes in the Indian population without any blood test. It uses four variables — age, waist circumference, physical activity and parental history — and a score of 60 or above indicates high risk.

It is a screening aid, not a diagnosis. A low score does not exclude diabetes, and a high score does not confirm it. Either way, the next step is a fasting blood glucose and HbA1c test.
